High-protein diets that restrict carbohydrate intake, such as the Atkins diet is believed by many people be able to accelerate weight loss. In fact, in the long run this diet has harmful side effects, one of those is attacking the large intestine.
In a study of 17 obese men in England, be found a high diet in protein and low in carbohydrates will lead to certain changes in the colon and in the long term this is feared to trigger colon cancer.
Research that's published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition is indeed only see a few remaining components of metabolism in the long term and not see the risk of disease factually. So the researchers say further research is still needed to conclude this colon cancer risk.
"The risk of colon cancer may be increased if high-protein diet was carried out in the long run, mainly because of lack of fiber intake," said senior researcher Dr.Harry J. Flint of the University of Aberdeen.
He added that instead of people who are overweight should not lose weight, but be aware of the nutrients the body needs must still be met, particularly fiber intake.
